Case Study:
Brothers Abner and Danial Hughes, farm side by side at Brychyni in Llangybi and have been using the TagFaster system since 2013. In this time, they have seen the tags and applicator improve significantly and are very happy with the outcome of the improvements it has today!
They tag the lambs around three months of age; the flock mainly consists of Texel X Lleyn lambs, that they then sell directly to the supermarket chain Waitrose. One of the extra benefits of the TagFaster slaughter tag, is that by having a pre-fix letter in front of the sequential number along with the UK flock number, enables them to know what individual numbers are going to the abattoir. They feel that this is beneficial to them, because if any problems do arise, they can identify which animal it was.
Any applicator whilst tagging in the pen, can inevitably fall on the floor sometimes, but one of the benefits of the TagFaster applicator, is the orange horn that holds the tags in place also helps to protect the pins and keeps them clean, helping to minimise infection. They have found the applicator to be robust and will work well when given a good clean after each use, ready for next time’s tagging.
With the TagFaster system the slaughter tags come in strips of 20 and feed automatically, of which the job of tagging large numbers becomes half the task and saves valuable time and money.
Having used the TagFaster slaughter tags successfully, they are also using the TWIN tags on the breeding ewes and red replacement tags on any bought in stock. The TWIN tags come in a strip of 10 pairs making the job, once again very convenient. With the improvements they have seen over the years, they have found the retention to be very good.
